Baroque philosopher Balthasar Gracian's The Art of Worldly Wisdom consists of three hundred maxims spanning a wide range of topics relating to all aspects of life and human behavior. Gracian was a Spanish Jesuit Priest whose sermons and writings were disapproved of by his superiors. Admired by Schopenhauer and Nietzsche for the depth and subtlety of his observations, Gracian's collection of pithy insights deserves place alongside similar classic manuals of self-improvement from antiquity like the Enchiridion of Epictetus and Seneca's Letters.

This is a translation from the original Castellano (Spanish). If you can read Spanish you should read the original. But in whatever language you read it, you should read it and read it many times. A man needs guidance. This Jesuit provides it. Jesuits are generally smart and experienced. This author from so long ago is a standard setter. Read this book slowly, then read it again, and again, and again. This is a lifetime companion. Little has changed in the context of the counsel that this book provides. Read it, and continue to read it continually. 15 minutes per day with this book will change your results beyond what you could imagine.Product details

The Art of Worldly Wisdom Balthasar Gracian 9781365961939 Books Reviews
One of the best books I've ever read. A bit like reading the Tao Te Ching, it is essentially laws of power and the right way to do things. You can read this a thousand times and get more out of it each time. I recommend reading the different translations - though I found this one very easy to understand.
This interesting book (The Art of Worldly Wisdom translated by Martin Fischer) contains 300 aphorisms taken from Baltasar Grecian’s numerous scholarly volumes. He lived around the 16th century teaching and writing. Not a whole lot is known about the author but he was a member of “the society of Jesus” which was a scholarly and academic group.
These aphorisms cover an enormous amount of subject areas. The following are just a small sample of the topics covered Mind and spirit, nature and art, fortune and fame, accomplish your ends, the art of being lucky, be gracious, think, never exaggerate, be shrewd, but not too shrewd, have strength of spirit, never lose your head, work with good tools, know how to refuse, generous in action, the art of living well, attain, and maintain a reputation, deal solely with men of honor, never talk about yourself, and many other bits of great advice.
If you are a seeker of knowledge and bits of wisdom from the ancient masters, you may want to check out this book. Even though the writing style is not always clear (could be because of the translation) or easy to understand nevertheless, this is still an excellent book to read. Some of the bits of wisdom are a pure joy to read.
Rating 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author Haiku Moments How to read, write and enjoy haiku).
Great book. Robert Greene cited this book frequently and prob used it as a base for 48 laws of power
one thing to note is that this book is really old so the language can be hard for the modern reader to understand
The old priest expresses wisdom, cunning, knowledge and grace unknown to this current age. The simplicity and profundity of each proverb lends itself easily to application. This little book will speak to even the wisest, or most foolish of hearts. Machiavelli is a pale shadow compared to the sagacity and foresight of Gracian. If there was a book that every man should read after the Holy Scriptures it is this one.
There are few things as satisfying as finding a delivery system - ancient or modern - that can perfectly capture the hidden meaning in otherwise "commonly" observed situations, phenomenon, habits, and human nature. Such that upon reading it, YOU immediately think "Damn, WHY can't I think as clearly as this...it should've been so obvious"!
The version of this book is mis-formatted. The cover of the book and copyright notice are at the end of the book instead of the beginning where they should be. The summary of the 300 aphorisms is at the end of the book instead of the beginning after the introduction where it should be.
This is a great book full of helpful advice - almost like little nuggets of wisdom from a father to a son. A friend gave me my first copy about six months ago and I have been reading it almost daily since then. The book is structured with over 200 pieces of advice each with a paragraph of two or text. Sometimes his writing is a little bit fluffy, but his advice is sound. I also like the fact that he has a practical side like Machivallei but keeps his morals compass (given he was a priest).
