Dr. Rory Wilson wrestles with the effects of childhood bullying by his father and others. Can he find it in his heart to forgive those who inflicted such pain, or will his scars prevent him from realizing a fulfilling family life? Three new F-words challenge Rory—forgiveness, family and fatherhood. Will he triumph yet again? Reviews of Lissa Brown’s Another F-Word “Bulls eye on several levels, as a coming-out/coming-of-age story, a lesson on damage caused by bullying, challenges faced by educators trying to encourage diversity and tolerance, and how parental priorities have to evolve with a gay or lesbian child... Five stars out of five.” —Echo Magazine “Educators and advisors should read it. Parents should... Young adults should, especially if you’re questioning your sexuality. The book might answer some questions and help you.” —Ambush Magazine “Excellent job portraying the challenges gay boys face as well as those of a loving parent trying to understand and accept... depicts the rejection, bullying and outright hate gays and lesbians face and shows how family dynamics can influence the adults they will become ... teenagers and adults would benefit from reading” —Midwest Book Review “Delivers excellent dialogue about homosexuality, teenage suicide, and coming out across three generations ... The characters are treated as compassionate, open-minded individuals ... educates people about dangers facing LGBT youth.” —UNITE Magazine “Succeeds on several levels. Shows the effects of parental bigotry and vicious treatment of a child, and offsets that with love and support from other family members and friends.” —PFLAG.net “Page-turner which will take your breath away ... realistic portrayal of a family and rural community coming to terms with the emerging sexuality of one of its most vulnerable citizens ... about the pain and consequences of bullying in our schools ... for any parent whose child has been the victim of bullying.” —Mountain Times

I'd be inclined to give this book five stars if only for the subject matter--it's such an important issue and there's far too little relevant reading material out there. But that's not all there is to like. The author has done a masterful job of making this story readable for both young people and adults. I wouldn't recommend it for the youngest of readers, but especially for those who are personally touched by issues such as bullying, same sex relationships, adoption, family rejection and redemption, as well as other areas covered by this story, I think it's appropriate even for pre-teens. Just in terms of the mechanics of writing, it's perfect, and that's so important to serious readers. The only qualm, if any, that I have is that I'm not 100% convinced that the voice of the main character, when he's telling his story, when he's thinking, is quite right. Even so, the story itself was strong enough that I wasn't really bothered by that question.

Family of Choice is a beautifully written story about acceptance, the strong bond of family, and absolution.

Dr. Rory Wilson has finally found the family happiness and sense of belonging he has longed for all his life. His partner, Nemo and Nemo's two children bring Rory much joy, but when Nemo asks Rory to become a legal guardian of the kids his past begins to haunt him. Rory fears he is unfit as a father due to the poor example expressed by his own dad. However, when a tragic auto accident leaves Nemo in ICU Rory is forced to take a long hard look at his life. Can he overcome his past and find it in his heart to forgive those who brought him so much pain?

This is a touching and heartfelt story that explores the challenges those with alternative lifestyles face. It's eyeopening to how stereotypes and ignorance negatively affect those being persecuted long after the torment has ended. The characters are well developed and relatable. I was drawn in as the characters' lives unfolded before me. I shared in their sorrow as well as their bliss and longed for Rory to find the forgiveness needed to mend his heart.

I highly recommend picking up a copy of Family of Choice.
This book has a marvelous way of presenting the dimensions involved with creating family. A thoroughly insightful read
Family of Choice is a wonderful sequel to Another F Word. We as readers are thankfully given a chance to see what happens when Rory leaves his small town and goes to university. This story is a stand alone read if you did not read the first book and if read first you will be enticed to go buy and read the first book Another F Word! Lissa Brown's writing style is fluid and draws you into the story, making you want more. Well done!
Dr. Rory Calhoun Wilson meets and falls in love with Dr. J. Viera who has two children. The arrangement makes for a different family, a family of choice. This novel by author Lissa Brown is a sequel to her previous novel, Another F word. Many of the conflicts from the previous novel are dealt with and resolved in the sequel, although the road to resolution is tortuous and painful. An enjoyable read.
Heart warming with lots of twists and turns. Better than the Young and the Restless! I was thrilled to learn the story of Rory would continue in a sequel and I was not let down. Many of the loose ends from the first book were visited. The addition of the boyfriend and his children showed how Rory, with his troubled childhood, grew to be a fantastic papa #2. Life, Love and Family are the focus through out the story. I was once again pulled in and looking forward to the third book in this series. Did I say third book? I just know there is yet more to be told and by the way the story closes another book is out there.
A compelling story told by a gifted storyteller. Although this is a continuation of the tale told in "Another F -Word" this story stands on its own. I read the story in one day, it was hard to put down. The story revolves around the cycle of hurt, alienation, and reconciliation so common in familial interaction. In this case the couple is gay however, the conflicts are those of all families gay or straight. I would recommend this as a fine, smooth, and compelling read.

I would recommend this book as a great read. It provides an insightful look into the trials of a gay couple, that aside it is an emotionally engaging read.

The Story was smooth and engaging from start to finish. I couldn't rate it less than five stars.
Full disclosure I know the author. This sequel does a great job of advancing the journey Rory is on in terms of finding family connections after a rocky childhood. The character development is great and I particularly like the children in this story. They really shine through and keep the adults honest. There is much to recommend here in terms of dealing with the very real issues of being a same-sex couple in a still very homophobic society. Also, this story shows many breakthroughs - both in terms of attitudes and in terms of legal issues. One area I feel was a missed opportunity was in how the car accident was handled. Rory and his partner Nimo conveniently happen to be doctors at major medical facilities and Nimo gets royal treatment and the issue of next of kin barriers for gay couples is barely addressed. This is a minor point. The power of forgiveness is explored well and is a main theme, and is characterized in a realistic fashion. Lissa Brown has another home run with Family of Choice!
